HodgepodgeReview

Why oh why, do I have to choose books lately that first break my heart a little, even though they later put the pieces back together? To this one and to all that came before it, let me dedicate this song to you, Quit Playing Games With My Heart by Backstreet Boys-and I so used to love that song!

It’s been two books by Sawyer Bennett for me, and by now I’ve learnt my lesson not to expect anything just too simple from her. I should’ve known I was in for something more, but next time, I’m definitely more prepared. What anyone might think as a fun sports romance was more emotional, more real, much deeper than you can imagine, and-maybe not so unexpectedly- sexy and romantic. The first book I already liked a lot, but perhaps because of the subject matter, or the characters in general, this one was a step further than that.

Review ~ Alex by Sawyer Bennett

AlexBook: Alex

Series: Cold Fury Hockey #1

Author: Sawyer Bennett

Genre: Contemporary Sports Romance

Format: e-book

Page Count: 224

Hockey star Alexander Crossman has a reputation as a cold-hearted player on and off the rink. Pushed into the sport by an alcoholic father, Alex isn’t afraid to give fans the proverbial middle finger, relishing his role as the MVP they love to hate. Management, however, isn’t so amused. Now Alex has a choice: fix his public image through community service or ride the bench. But Alex refuses to be molded into the Carolina Cold Fury poster boy . . . not even by a tempting redhead with killer curves.

As a social worker, Sutton Price is accustomed to difficult people—like Alex, who’s been assigned to help her create a drug-abuse awareness program for at-risk youth as part of the team’s effort to clean up his image. What she doesn’t expect is the arrogant smirk from his perfect lips to stir her most heated fantasies. But Sutton isn’t one to cross professional boundaries—and besides, Alex doesn’t do relationships . . . or does he? The more she sees behind Alex’s bad-boy façade, the more Sutton craves the man she uncovers.

Well, here’s a sport I know I’m interested in now. I like to watch all sports really, and I do like variety in my romances, so here we go. Hockey players make good heroes? We’ll see. But I can say they had a pretty good start with Alex.
Despite the fact that this book surprised me with its fist person point of view, I found that it actually suited the story well. I’m not a big fan of this kind of narration in general, but when done right, it can help a lot in getting to know the characters well. And since the book dealt with a delicate matter like addiction through some side characters, I think it was the right choice to let Alex and Sutton voice their own feelings themselves. Besides, I think it’d be fun to read a series with heroes and heroines talking right at us, don’t you think?
