Release Day Review ~ Struck by Amanda Carlson

StruckBook: Struck

Author: Amanda Carlson

Genre: Urban Fantasy

Release Day: May 24, 2016

When Phoebe Meadows gets struck by a strange light in the stockroom of Macy’s, life as she knows it flies out the window. As if being hit by lightning isn’t bad enough, she’s accosted in the subway by a man with a missing hand, arrives home to find a raven on her kitchen counter, and her neighbor, Ingrid, shows up dressed like a gladiator hell-bent on protecting her.

Before Ingrid can shuttle her to safety, Phoebe is kidnapped and tossed into one of the Nine Worlds where she’s quickly forced to come to terms with what she is: A valkyrie. The only problem is, she has no idea what that means.

After a narrow escape, she finds an unlikely ally in Loki’s son, Fenrir. Together the valkyrie and the wolf must battle their way back to New York City and reach the valkyrie stronghold where Ingrid is waiting for her. But with danger and obstacles at every turn, she might not live long enough to learn the full truth about who and what she really is…

I like stories with kickass heroines. It doesn’t matter whether they’re already a part of the world of the book, or they come into their powers along the way, those stories call to me. They have a good pace, as is the case with all urban fantasy series, and I really enjoy getting into the heads of the heroines while they most likely deal with all kinds of troublemakers and frustrating heroes.

Phoebe was one of those who discovered her powers along the way. She was a Valkyrie but didn’t know about it until the day she was struck by lightning in the stockroom in Macy’s. Before she could dwell on that particular oddity, she was shooed from her own home and later, kidnapped. She did face some horrifying creatures by the way. And to her credit, freaked out on a lower scale compared to how I imagine I would’ve reacted. Hmm, must be the Valkyrie blood.

Lacy Dawson is a young singer-songwriter with a record deal, a studio gig, and a serious case of writer’s block. After looking for love songs in all the wrong places, she finds inspiration at an online support group called Song Writers Anonymous. Thanks to one mysterious member who motivates her and inspires her, Lacy’s career is back on track. But is she ready to meet her sexy musical muse…face to face?

Eli is definitely interested in hooking up with Lacy, aka “LoveCoda.” But between writing her new album and his band’s success, they can’t find the time to face the music-or each other-about their burgeoning online romance. All that changes when Eli and Lucy get booked on tour together. In person, the attraction is all too real and explosive. They both should walk away, but once they are in each other’s arms, there is no turning back…

Ever heard of the movie You’ve Got Mail, with Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks? It was a sweet movie. Kinda was the definition of romance when I was younger. Well, this book followed the same idea, only it was sexier, funnier,  sweeter, definitely more romantic, with the same level of emotional, and of course, with a happy ending.

Having had my share of internet romanticism-in my youth, mind you, nowadays I’m strictly more adult in the virtual world- and my own kind of blockage, I loved the premise of this story. It took me back, no matter how much more we’re involved with internet these days. I was almost immediately smitten with the idea of people with the same passion coming together on a platform to share everything about it. I do the same with books, while Eli and Lacey had their music. And music was the basis of their story. It made me happy that since they were both musicians, their passion wasn’t pushed aside once their romance began. Music was in a supporting role, like a best friend who played matchmaker.

For Rachel Parker, covering the San Francisco Goliaths is the perfect opportunity to launch her career as a serious reporter. But she didn’t bargain on Bryce Baxter, the team’s star shortstop, tempting her more non-professional aspirations. After tearing up the base paths with him, she finds herself with a little problem, and Bryce might be the only man who can save the game.

Bryce Baxter should be living the dream. His team just won the World Series and he just signed the multi-year contract of his career. But his field of dreams has been overtaken by a fiery redheaded reporter, who’s bearing a news flash that will change both of their lives forever…

This book was a huge, big disappointment for me. Sure, the first book I’ve read of this series didn’t impress me much, but the next book was better, and the next one even more so. So EARNING A RING should’ve been the jackpot moment for me, considering the couple was the only one I actually was dying to read because of their instant chemistry. Was it like hitting the jackpot? Not so much.

First of all, I didn’t buy the emotional connection between Bryce and Rachel all. They had more connection in other couples’ books than they had in their own. How disappointing. I felt as if the author took the unexpected pregnancy plot and simply ran with it. A success story for me this was not though.
