Carys Chase is accustomed to making her own rules and letting her heart lead the way–no matter what anyone else has to say about it. A rare Breed female and a daywalker as well, headstrong, beautiful Carys is one of the most powerful of her kind. She lives passionately and loves without limits, especially when it comes to the lethal cage-fighting Breed warrior called Rune.

Unbeatable in the ring, Rune exists in a brutal world of blood and bone and death. He’s made his share of enemies both in and out of the arena, and his secrets run as deep and turbulent as his past. A dangerous loner who has survived by his fists and fangs, Rune has never allowed anyone to get too close to him…until Carys. But when the bodies buried in his past rise up to threaten his present, Rune must choose between betraying Carys’s trust or putting her in the crosshairs of a battle neither of them can hope to win on their own.

Oh, how much I missed the Midnight Breed series..I couldn’t tell you what a pleasure it was to be back in this world.
It’s been a while since I last read a book from this series, and I have to admit, I might’ve neglected to read them-only a little, I swear!- but to pick it up and start where I left off was just the kind of reading break I needed. It’s always nice to discover new authors, delve into new worlds and experience new things, but there is nothing like falling into that comfortable bubble with just you and one of your favorite authors.

Those who’re familiar with this series will need no introductions simply because I’m sure they’ve read this already, but those who don’t know, please pick it up if you like vampiric paranormal romance. I know they’ve been told about in a million different ways these blood sucking creatures, but Lara Adrian’s interpretation is definitely one of my favorites of the genre. She takes the term vampire and puts a new spin to it, adding all kinds of plotlines and history, and then mixes them up with yet another myth. She spins a tale that’s quite enjoyable and sexy. The best part though, and this is lacking in so many examples of the same genre, is the heroines. They’re not just ornaments for the reading pleasure of sexy times, but they’re an integral part of the story. They have their own storylines, their own strength and weaknesses. Simply put, they have their own voices in these books. I know the series is called the MIDNIGHT BREED, and the name Breed is the one given to the males of the species, but these are as much the heroines’ stories as the heroes. Not one character is tossed aside, and this is what I love about the MIDNIGHT BREED.

In this book, we continue to read about the younger generations, this time Carys and Rune. They were a couple already from the previous books, but of course their story was far from closure. Carys was one of the strongest females in the series, and I mean that literally, so it was nice to read her fight. I love me a good kickass heroine. I could relate to her in her stubborn streak while experiencing her first love, but also she had some serious strength in her that everyone unknowingly failed to see.
Rune was the same strength paired with a dark past. I liked his vulnerability hidden behind the brutality in cage fights, and I loved his sense of loyalty and love. He’s been through a lot this one, and like his predecessors, he’s overcome all that himself with help from his heroine.

I’m curious as to where things are going, and can’t wait to read the next book. Yes, there are still many characters whose stories I’m eagerly waiting for, but also I enjoy the way the Breed world’s secrets unfurling. The only thing that bothers me is the period of time I have to wait to get my hands on the next book. Oh, but that’s just the thorn of the rose, isn’t it?

I’m adding four spoonfuls of this story into my hodgepodge. Now, where did I put my sexy Atlantean attracting device? Oh wait, they didn’t invent that yet? Damn shame.
