It seems like I’m on a course of novellas these days. The last three books I’ve read were either novellas or short stories which was nice, they made me realize it doesn’t matter whether a story is three hundred pages long or just fifty or so, what matters is the plot and how the author chooses to tell it. And here I am, having read yet another novella, about two people who are lonely and trying to secure a place in each other.

Jessica is a woman alone. She works from home, though what she does I can’t remember. She’s got a mother who’s suffering from what I think is Alzheimer’s, and she’s not exactly the social type. She longs for a family, children, but luck has never been on her side and for a while now she’s been in love with her long time best friend, Daniel. Daniel is a pastor in a local church. He wants to transfer to their hometown but his acceptance of this new position depends on him being married. He’s a widower of two years, and having loved his wife a great deal, has never seen Jessica as anything other than his friend. So it comes as a great surprise to him when Jessica proposes a deal that would benefit them both. They should get married, so Jessica could have the family she dreamed, and Daniel could have the job he’d always wanted. A win-win situation, yes? Not exactly.

This was a short yet very sweet story. For a romance that was sixty something pages, it had a good pace. We met the characters when they themselves met for the first time, and we kept delving into their lives in certain periods of the year, like christmas, thanksgiving and valentines, which made the story flow easily.

Tomas is an Olympic medalled swimmer who has his own massage therapist. He’s not very social for the strict and disciplined way he lives his life, so when his therapist has to leave for an emergency and sends her replacement, Darren, Tomas is met with a nice surprise.

The Rake’s Redemption is a story about finding love for the second time, it is about facing your past and moving on to your future. I could say all this because it is about all those things, unfortunately though, it falls short in making me feel them. Those are just the conclusions I drew in the end of the story, like when I was in high school and we were required to read a book and give a brief summary about what it was talking about. I’d read the book, but then I wouldn’t exactly connect with it further than was necessary for my homework. It’s a shame though, because the storyline was promising and a particular subplot was most interesting.

Juliana Grenville is a widow, albeit a young one of twenty three. She’s met her husband when she was young and they enjoyed a very short marriage of one month before he perished at war six years ago. Now she passes her time taking care of her home and her brother, but in order to relieve her brother of the responsibility of caring for a young widowed sister, she wishes to marry another widower like herself, preferably with kids. So she plots to travel to London with her aunt. There she meets Dominic, Marquis of Aubrey, who’s a rake, but also somewhat of a mystery. He’s most definitely what she is not looking for in a husband, and yet the heart wants what it wants, and before they-and us- know it, they find themselves falling in love and facing their unique obstacles in order to end up happy together.

The emotional in this book was off the charts. I swear towards the middle of the book, where all the necessary stuff that needed to be out in the open was being let out in the open, I read it all with a lump in my throat. I admit, I’m a bit of a crybaby. Give me anything even remotely dramatic and watch the waterworks. And considering this book had twin brothers who were close and who also loved the same woman, with only one of them surviving the beginning of the series, I’m sure you can understand me doing the reading with a clarity in my eyes that only unshed tears can provide.

Jake Edwards has left the small town of Crystal Lake after his brother’s funeral a year ago. He lives in a dark place along with his grief over his brother’s death, his own nightmares from his days in Afghanistan where he served with, and lost his brother, and his guilt over loving his sister-in-law. He finally decides to come back to his hometown and piece his life back together as best he can. And the biggest piece of all? Raine, his brother’s widow, the only woman he ever loved.

I find that for a long while now, almost all the series-first books I’ve read fell just a little short and gained four stars from me. I’m not one to usually be picky about my five stars, but I look for that something that makes me come back to the book after a break. For a while after the start of this book I thought it was a four star read but then, about halfway, things got really intense and interesting and I had a hard time putting it down.

Cain Black is the famous rock star of small town Crystal Lake-what a marvelous name!- and he comes back to his hometown for his childhood friend’s funeral, after years of being away building his famous career.
