Finally, I had a chance to meet Kate. It was a long time coming too, friends couldn’t recommend her enough, and I always welcome a chance to meet a kickass heroine.
I’m fairly new to the urban fantasy genre, but with the good choices I picked up lately, I think this is going to go among my favorites. Reading a different couple every book is fun and keeps me excited with expectations, but to have one person and go through their life with them, not knowing what new adventures await them is also quite fun. And it also keeps me on edge.
Since I had so many friends recommending this series to me, those who know it probably already read to the latest book, but if there are those out there who weren’t familiar with these books, let me introduce Kate. She’s a mercenary who cleans up after either magic goes haywire or people screw up. I liked Kate, not only is she a woman who can kick ass, she also has a softer side to her that doesn’t even hide behind a tough exterior. From the very start I could clearly see she had her doubts and fears, her own weaknesses, everything that made her a human-so to speak-, but she was also clearly very talented and very powerful. She’s not cocky too, which is a pet peeve of mine when it comes to strong women. More often than not I come across a heroine I want to slap rather than cheer on. Thankfully, Kate was not one of them, in fact, I cheered her on like a banshee.
Even though magic is not exactly my favorite plotline, I admit the magic in this book was interesting. It wasn’t just witches and spells either, the world is filled with other creatures, shapeshifters, vampires, gods and so much more I’ll probably see in the coming books.
While I write this review, I’ve already finished the first two books, so I have grounds to make a comparison. I admit, the first book was harder to follow, probably because it was a first in a series so the introduction into the world took a while for me to settle, but by the time I got to the second book, the writing just flew off the page and swirled around my mind, it was so much more easier to follow Kate’s words. Not to mention I loved Kate even more in the second book, and I was glad that even though there’s a big bad alpha involved in all, the story wasn’t focused solely on their attraction. Seems like that is going to grow gradually, and hey, I might enjoy sexual tension as much as the next gal, but I still like the pace of their relationship for now. It’s smooth, you know it’s there, but it’s also not clear. When it finally hits, it’s probably going to be a hot one. And it’s summer, how am I going to deal with that?
Well then, I should move on to the next one now. There’s little time, and lots more to catch up on, and I’m hoping to see more Beast Lord and Kate interactions, and let’s see what other crap is waiting around the corner for Kate-sorry Kate, but as an urban fantasy heroine, you know it’ll be crappy!
Before she comes to kick my ass and ruin my kitchen, I’m adding four big spoonfuls of her story into my hodgepodge and pretend I’m not at home. Nope, too late, she’s peeking through the window, she knows I’m home!
