It’s been a while since I last read a book by Gena Showalter, meaning, it’s been a while since my last Lords of The Underworld book. I knew she wrote a series based on the delicious angels that popped up in those books but somehow I never had a chance to pick them up. The other day I changed that fact and boy, am I glad.
In the first of this series, the leader of the Army of Doom, or, you know, the army of angels who’re dangerously close to falling, Zacharel meets the woman who’ll melt the ice around his heart in Annabelle, a mental patient who’s been locked away for saying a demon killed her parents, when everyone of course believed it was her, and that she lost her mind. Think again, clueless humans!
Zacharel is the usual cold, cold and some more cold hero that’s quite expected in a PNR. He’s a no nonsense guy, an angel who lost his ability to feel long ago. Not to mention the fact that he has to deal with the most badass and unwanted angels with attitude problems. So it’s kinda hard to blame the guy for his tough love act. Even though it had been a long time, I remember I liked Zacharel even then, when he appeared in the Lords’ books. I’m glad Gena decided to write a series solely for the angels because let’s face it, they’re always intriguing, and they’re certainly no cherubs. These are big muscled men who fight for humans, even though they may not be all that on board with the caring part, and they do fight dirty.
The few members of Zacharel’s army, we meet in this book, and I’m very curious to know their stories, you can tell every single one of them has something dark lurking in their background. I, for one, am a sucker for tortured pasts, what that tells you, I don’t wanna know.
Annabelle was a good heroine, a good mix of badass and vulnerable. She was good enough to defend herself and take no crap from no one, but faced with demons there’s only so much a girl can do. And I’m glad that Gena is one of those authors who can pull off the tough girl character writing, otherwise this book could’ve turned painful for me. But thanks to this lovely author, I got to like and cheer for Annabelle all the way through.
Perhaps my one tiny bit of complaint could come in the form of Zacharel’s transformation from the cold and unfeeling angel leader to the caring and loving hero. Don’t get me wrong, I liked it, but there were times when I was a bit taken aback by his show of emotion, and of course it’s quite natural since how else is he supposed to fall in love, but it’s difficult to describe, I just felt it was sudden at times. One thing I’m sure of though, is that he won’t let his men to give him a hard time for his show of devotion to his woman. Not to mention, they’ll all get theirs.
The plot was a good mix of interesting trivia and action, it can be nothing but engaging when angels and demons are concerned after all. And before any of them rain down on me, although I certainly wouldn’t mind some of those sexy angels, I’m adding four spoonfuls of this story into my hodgepodge.
