And with this book, I say goodbye to yet another series by one of my favorite historical romance authors. Did I enjoy it? Yes. Was it life changing? Not exactly. But it certainly was enjoyable, or perhaps I’m biased because it’s Julia Quinn we’re talking about here, and let’s face it, I’m never letting go of anything by her.
The story starts off just around the same time as the previous one has ended, where our hero Dunford -whose first name is a well known mystery- receives news that a distant relative had passed away and he earned a lordship and a big estate. This big estate, however, is managed by one diligent Henrietta ‘Call Me Henry, Everybody Does! Barrett. She’s a hardworking woman, she likes to wear breeches and isn’t afraid to get her hands dirty, or her dresses!
So you see where this is going? A well known rake meets his match in a well working innocent.
I’ve been looking forward to this book, simply because Dunford had managed to impress me with his nonchalant ways, and well, for the fact that he was a rake and he was just about to be brought down on his knees.
The story wasn’t disappointing per se, but we didn’t get to see much of Dunford’s struggle with himself when it was time for him to realize how he felt towards Henry, and how he had to leave his carefree lifestyle.
And as for Henry, I would’ve liked to see her more in her usual setting, that is the estate she managed, instead of her trying to learn the ways of society. So yeah, I think I would’ve preferred the story be told in the country instead of London.
And there wasn’t much of a plot, lest you count the rake falling in love, but there is a shadow of a plot line towards the end that you already know how will end. So, no action of any kind in this one, but still an enjoyable read. Besides, I don’t think you can do much wrong with a Julia Quinn.
I’m adding 3 spoonfuls of this nice story into my hodgepodge.
